Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Developed by psychologist Abraham Maslow in 1943.
Throughout the life span, individuals seek self-actualization. Lower-level
needs must be fulfilled before higher-level needs can be fulfilled. People
fluctuate between levels depending on life circumstances.
Physiological Needs
Food, water, shelter, warmth, sexual expression
Safety
Security, freedom from fear, physical safety
Love
Satisfying interpersonal relationships
Esteem
Achievement, mastery, self-respect
Self-Actualization
Self-fulfillment, reach highest potential
