The dissociative reaction - A psychological defence mechanism in which a person views unpleasant ideas or events, such as being assaulted, in an unusually detached way in order to protect himself or herself from overwhelming feelings such as fear.
In more severe cases, certain mental processes are split off from the rest of a person’s mental activity and may function independently (see dissociative disorders).
