Loperamide

Loperamide - Reduces GI motility by direct effect on nerve endings and intramural ganglia within the intestinal wall.Very little is absorbed systemically.

Uses
Acute or chronic diarrhoea

Contraindications
Bowel obstruction
Toxic megacolon
Pseudomembranous colitis

Administration
Orally: 4 mg, then 2 mg after each loose stool to a usual maximum of 16 mg/day
Available in 2 mg capsules and 1 mg/5 ml syrup
Stools should be cultured

Adverse effects
Bloating
Abdominal pain
