Equipment
■ Correctly sized sterile gloves.
■ Sterile gown.
■ Be Smart! These should be lying on a sterile field. If not, you must create a sterile field to place them on.
Key Points
■ Put on shoe covers, hair covers, and mask before the scrub.
■ Perform the surgical scrub and dry your hands well.
■ Grasp the gown at the neckline and slide your arms into the sleeves, but not through the cuffs (keep hands inside the sleeves).
■ Have a coworker pull the shoulders of your gown up and tie the necktie for you.
■ Don gloves using the closed method by keeping your hands covered at all times, first with the sleeve, then the sterile glove.
■ Glove the dominant hand first, then the nondominant hand.
■ When gloving, lay the glove on the sleeve-encased forearm thumb side down, with the glove opening pointing toward your fingers.
■ Secure the waist tie on your gown by handing it to a coworker and turning to receive it.
■ Keep your hands within your field of vision at all times.
■ Do not turn your back to a sterile field.
