Donning Personal Protective Equipment

Equipment
■ Following CDC recommendations, you will usually use some combination of these items, depending on the organism and level of precaution (e.g., you will use hair covers and shoe covers when full barrier precautions are needed):
■ Disposable gloves of the proper size.
■ Disposable isolation gown.
■ Face mask (or N-95 respirator mask, as indicated).
■ Face shield or goggles.
■ Hair cover.
■ Shoe covers.

■ Be Safe! Before exposure, don appropriate PPE according to standard precautions or transmission guidelines.
■ The CDC sequence for donning PPE is:
■ First put on gown.
■ Apply a surgical mask for droplet isolation or an N-95 respirator mask for airborne isolation.
■ Put on goggles or a face shield.
■ Don gloves.

Documentation
■ The use of PPE is assumed and does not require documentation.
